Thirteen years wrongfully imprisoned. One man's fight for justice that provides the Nations leading consultation, case management and paralegal services.
The true story of wrongful conviction, self-representation, and ultimate vindication in the West Virginia criminal justice system.
Arrested on April 20, 2012, Edward "Jesse" Dreyfuse spent 13 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. Released as exonerated on July 29, 2025, by Honorable Judge Jay M. Hoke after the entire Cabell County judicial system was disqualified due to fabricated evidence. This is the story of how he fought the system, represented himself in court, and ultimately secured his freedom.
On June 19, 2012, Prosecutor Chris Chiles and Detective Ryan Bentley presented perjured testimony to the grand jury, falsely claiming victim Otis Clay suffered multiple facial fractures, a major skull fracture, and exposed brain matter from a baseball bat attack. These injuries never existed according to the state medical examiner's autopsy report. Despite zero physical evidence, Edward was convicted in 2013 and sentenced to life without parole based on this fabricated "Ballbat Killer" narrative.
His court-appointed defense failed to challenge the fabricated evidence, properly examine the autopsy report, or present exculpatory information. Key witness James Marcum later recanted his testimony, admitting Chiles and Bentley coerced him to lie after Edward rejected a plea deal.
Rather than accept his fate, Edward spent years in the prison library, teaching himself criminal law, appellate procedure, and constitutional rights. In 2020, his pro se filings successfully unsealed the autopsy report, exposing the prosecution's lies. In 2022, he won a precedent-setting case before the West Virginia Supreme Court (Case No. 18-0271, In re Dreyfuse), securing the right to present a grand jury complaint against law enforcement for suborning perjury.
With support from National Public Awareness (N.P.A.), witness recantations were secured, and the prosecutorial misconduct was exposed. In 2024, the entire Cabell County judicial system was disqualified, and Judge Jay M. Hoke vacated Edward's conviction on July 29, 2024. He was fully released and exonerated on July 29, 2025.
Edward's case is part of a disturbing pattern of false arrests, wrongful convictions, and unjust imprisonments happening across America. This is not an isolated incident—it's a systemic failure of justice.

Freedom achieved
Justice Prevailed
There are battles that test the body, and there are battles that test the soul. For Edward Jesse Dreyfuse, the fight against wrongful conviction became both.
That strength did not come from pride or anger. It came from faith. It was by the grace of GOD that he found the endurance to survive the darkness — and through faith that he continued believing justice would eventually rise above corruption, deception, and despair.
"Indeed, Allah is with the patient."
— Quran 2:153
That patience became strength. That strength became endurance. And through the grace of GOD, justice prevailed.
